The famous Caledonian Canal, one of Thomas Telford's masterpieces, commenced in 1803, but not completed until 44 years later.

Neptune's Staircase, north of Ft. William, is a series of nine locks in the Caledonian Canal. The canal, opened in 1847, connects Loch Ness to Loch Linnhe and provides a safer inland route through Scotland from Moray Firth to the Firth of Lorne.

As the lock valves open, the water from the higher lock rushes to the lower to rais it's level

Finally equalized, the boat can now come through.

The roadway has to swing out to let the canal traffic through.

Now on Loch Linnhe level, the yacht can proceed

And pass the open road and rail bridges.
